Virtual Production
This section features projects that used an LED Volume Stage to film real-life actors with interactive Unreal Engine Environments.
The Wanting Tree
Set and Prop Creation
The original tree prop was a quick CG version created in ZBrush, but as the project developed into a volume-stage film project, the need for a physical prop became apparent.
The director and I worked closely to create a prop tree for a series of close-up shots of the actor with the tree. First, I designed a plan and a list of needed materials, based on my previous theatrical set design experience.
I used insulation foam boards for the internal structure and spray foam to create the tree texture. The tree had to stay light enough for a small crew to move and hollow enough to support a special effect needed for a sequence.
We painted the outside and added real moss to hide imperfections and help the tree blend with the CG environment. Once the tree was on set, we used more moss to blend it with the ground. The moss created a seamless transition between the LED screen and the set.
On Set
On set for this short film, I worked as the Production Designer to ensure each shot looked cohesive and the LED wall integrated smoothly.
We used real plants and moss to blend the CG environment with the foreground and match the on-set lighting to the CG environment’s lighting.
I worked closely with the Director throughout the entire pipeline, but on set I also worked closely with the crew, particularly the Director of Photography, to reflect her vision.
